Choosing the Right Cigar Cutter
Understanding how different cuts affect your smoking experience
How to Cut a Cigar
Cutting a cigar properly is simple, but doing it right makes a noticeable difference in how it draws and burns. The goal is to open the cap without damaging the wrapper.
1) Cut just above the shoulder
Locate the Cap, it’s the small, rounded piece of wrapper leaf that seals the head of the cigar. You only want to cut just above the shoulder of the cap. Place your cutter right above the shoulder and make a quick, clean cut. Cutting too low can cause the wrapper to unravel, while cutting too high can restrict airflow.
2) Use a sharp cutter
A dull blade can tear the wrapper instead of slicing it cleanly. Always use a sharp, quality cutter for the best results. Don’t hesitate, use a quick, decisive motion. Slow or uneven cuts are more likely to damage the cigar.
3) Test the draw
Before lighting, take a dry puff to check airflow. If it feels too tight, you can make a slightly deeper cut if needed. PSA: Using lounge or shared cutters? Get your cut right the first time. Going back in after the cigar’s been in your mouth isn’t a great look, and definitely not appreciated.

Most Common Cuts
Straight Cut:
Most Forgiving

A straight cut is often considered the most natural and consistent draw. It opens the cigar more than most shallow cuts, allowing for fuller airflow and an easy pull.
How it affects smokability:
- Often produces a fuller smoke output due to increased airflow
- Can feel smooth and easy to draw when properly cut
- Cutting too deep can create an overly loose draw (hotter smoke + faster burn)
Best for these cigars:
- Most parejos (robusto, toro, churchill, etc.)
- Milder cigars where an open draw helps deliver more flavor
- Tighter-rolled cigars that benefit from increased airflow
When it’s not ideal:
- Cigars with very soft or delicate caps (can crack if overcut)
- Pointed heads like torpedoes if cut too deep (risk of unraveling)
Punch Cut:
A Controlled, Slower Draw

A punch cut removes a small circular section from the cap, keeping most of it intact. This creates a more restricted, controlled draw and a cleaner smoking experience.
How it affects smokability:
- Draw is more restricted, often resulting in a slower, cooler burn
- Very clean mouthfeel with minimal loose tobacco
- Can feel too tight if the cigar already has limited airflow
Best for these cigars:
- Medium ring gauge cigars that already have a good draw
- Cigars with delicate wrappers (less stress on the cap)
- Situations where you want a slower, more controlled smoke
When it’s not ideal:
- Tight cigars (can restrict airflow too much)
- Very large ring gauge cigars (single punch may feel insufficient)
V-Cut:
More Flavor Focus

A V-cut creates a wedge-shaped opening that concentrates airflow into a narrower channel. Many smokers feel this focuses flavors and offers a more controlled draw.
How it affects smokability:
- Smoke feels more concentrated due to the narrower opening
- Draw is often slightly more resistant than a straight cut
- Can reduce loose tobacco reaching your mouth
Best for these cigars:
- Larger ring gauge cigars (more surface area for the cut)
- Medium-to-full cigars where a more focused draw enhances intensity
- Cigars that feel too airy with a straight cut
When it’s not ideal:
- Thick caps that require a deeper cut to open properly
- Small ring gauge cigars (can feel tight or awkward)
